The handset design means the IsatPhone Pro can be simply placed on its side with the antenna deployed for connection to the satellite while a micro USB cable connects it to a laptop. And the Inmarsat-4 satellites on which the service runs are, of course, designed specifically to handle data communications.
Customers are pleased with the performance of IsatPhone Pro’s data capability. It is proving to be very robust whether using generic or customised applications. In testing we have actually exceeded 20kbps throughput with plain text email on several occasions. It’s ideal for those people wanting to access emails, jpegs, documents or PDFs.
Users will be able to upgrade their firmware on the handset to use this. Contact us and we send you the update information and files.

What are the plans around SPS migration?
Inmarsat does not plan to close SPS-based services until global variants have been launched to replace them. In this context, Inmarsat intends to support the SPS-based versions of IsatPhone, LandPhone and FleetPhone until at least 2011.
However, SPS SIMs will not be supported in GSPS terminals and vice versa.
We intend to offer a promotional incentive to encourage SPS users to upgrade to the new IsatPhone Pro
When will future products within the GSPS family be launched?
Inmarsat is currently evaluating requirements for global versions of FleetPhone and LandPhone. In addition, the indoor and maritime docking units for IsatPhone Pro will serve as an alternative choice in the fixed and maritime markets.
A secure version of IsatPhone for the government market is also in the planning stages and we will confirm launch details as they become available.

How to send an SMS to the Isatphone Pro
The easiest (and FREE) way to send a text to an Inmarsat IsatPhone Pro is to use your email client software.
Step 1: Open your email program; Outlook, Windows Live Mail, Thunderbird, Gmail, Hotmail, etc. and proceed as if you were sending a regular email.
Step 2: In the email address field; enter the IsatPhone Pro # ( Example: 8707xxxxxxxx), the # will begin with 8707 and it will contain 12 digits. Then add @message.inmarsat.com after the IsatPhone Pro number.
Step 3: Complete the text or SMS message in the body of the email, but remember you only have 160 characters.
Step 4: Send the message as you would send a regular email!
Satellite Tracking on the IsatPhone Pro
The IsatPhone Pro has a built in GPS location feature. Select the Menu option on the phone and then select the GPS tool. Send your GPS coordinates to either a mobile phone via a text message or to an email address. When this info is received copy and paste following the instructions below and voila you will instantly see where you are in the world.
The benefits are enormous as it allows for example to get a GPS lock if you are lost or in need of medical assistance or simply if somebody wants to know where you are.
Instructions:
Send a GPS coordinate text message via the IsatPhone Pro to a cell phone or email.
You will receive a message similar to this: GPS fix Lat: N 9 59' 37' 79'' Long: W 84 11' 29'72'' Time: 12:00:00 UTC Date: 01-01-2011 Altitude: 850 m Velocity: 0 km/h Accuracy Horiz: +/- 8 m Vert: +/- 32 m
Now strip out the GPS co-ords ie: Lat: N 9 59' 37' 79'' Long: W 84 11' 29'72'': and remove the Lat: and Long: and degree signs ie ' and " so that it reads N 9 59 37 79 W 84 11 29 72
Copy and paste this GPS code into the search box at Google Maps and click the Search Maps button.
You will then get the location for those GPS coordinates. Please note that the location might be slightly off from your exact location due to the continuous earth and satellite movement.

How is the SIM card inserted into the IsatPhone Pro?
Remove the battery cover by using a coin to turn the screw slot on the back of the ISAT phone, until it is vertical. If the battery is in place, lift it out. Slide the catch down on the SIM holder and flip it outwards. Make sure the angled corner of your SIM card is on your left and slide it into the holder. Flip the holder back into place and slide the catch back up. Insert the battery, replace the cover and turn the screw slot until it is horizontal.
How is the IsatPhone Pro switched on and off?
Hold down the red key which is found on the top right of the main keypad, until the screen lights up. The first time you use your phone, use the navigation keys to select your language and set the time zone. To switch off, hold down the red key until the screen shuts down.
How does the IsatPhone Pro connect to the Inmarsat network?
Stand outside with a clear view of the sky with the phone antenna pointing upwards. There must be a clear line of sight between the phone's antenna and the satellite. The more sky you can see the stronger the signal should be from the satellite. If open sky makes up about 70% of your view when you look up, then the signal should be strong. Searching satellite will appear on the screen. The top left of the screen will display Inmarsat when your phone is connected to the satellite. The signal bars indicate the signal strength. At least two signal bars are required to make and receive call.
How does the IsatPhone Pro obtain a GPS fix?
Before a call can be made, the phone needs a GPS fix so it can be located by the satellite. This happens automatically but if a new GPS fix is needed, the GPS fix icon will be displayed on the screen. The phone should be kept in the open with a clear view of the sky until the icon on the screen disappears. Once this is done the phone is now ready to register with the network.
Can a GPS fix be obtained manually?
If the phone continues to show the GPS fix required icon (which means that a new GPS fix is needed) select Menu > GPS position. The new GPS fix is displayed. When this screen is open, the phone will attempt to refresh the GPS fix every 30 seconds.
How is the redial feature used on the IsatPhone Pro?
If you press the green button you can see a list of the previous numbers which you have dialled. Cycle through the numbers with the cursor keys, and when you reach the one you want to call press the green button again to call it.
How is the voicemail feature accesed on the IsatPhone Pro?
To retrieve and listen to voicemails press and hold down the 1 key, or dial 57. This will then automatically dial your voicemail inbox. Alternatively you can dial the voicemail box directly on +870 772 001 899 and press the green key to dial
How is the IsatPhone Pro's battery charged?
Plug the charger into the power source. Then connect the mini USB connector from the plug into the base of the phone. Leave to charge until battery is full ( it's important to fully charge when first purchased ).
What is the Email centre number for the IsatPhone Pro?
The Email centre number is 456. This should be stored on the SIM when it is delivered and the handset should use this value as the default.
If the value is different perform the following operation: Open Menu>Messaging>Options Select Settings>Email settings This will display a list of the stored Email centre numbers If there is no stored value, or the value is +456 choose Select highlight choose Options>Edit enter 456 choose Apply The handset prompts the user: Choose Yes .
What is the format to send an email to the IsatPhone Pro?
The format to send an email to the ISAT Phone Pro is: 870776xxxx@message.inmarsat.com This is covered in the user guide that can be found on the website under section 25. http://www.inmarsat.com/Services/Land/IsatPhone/support.htm?language=EN&textonly=False
What is the actual radiation pattern of the handheld antenna?
(To be able to judge required amount of tilt when pointing to satellite)? The antenna is omni-directional but does have a slight gain towards the tip of the antenna. This only needs to be pointed in the general direction of the sky/satellite for maximum signal strength but the elevation angle is not critical until you are near the edge of the satellites coverage.
